Have you ever heard the saying “too many cooks spoil the broth”? It’s a common concern when it comes to diverse teams, where a mix of backgrounds and perspectives is often seen as a recipe for conflict and inefficiency. But what if, like fusion cuisine, the blending of different ingredients could actually create something more flavorful and innovative?

The term “fusion cuisine” often gets positioned as something trendy or novel, but let’s be honest: our food has always been a melting pot. Italian cuisine didn’t feature tomatoes until explorers brought them back from the Americas. Japanese tempura may have roots in Spanish pescaito frito, introduced by Portuguese missionaries. Even noodles and spaghetti—seemingly worlds apart—share striking similarities. Food, like languages and cultures, evolves. Each new exposure leaves a mark, creating something that’s both familiar and refreshingly different.

The same is true for diverse teams. When people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives come together, they create something greater than the sum of their parts. It’s not a process without friction, but it’s one that’s essential for growth and innovation.

The Challenges of Blending – And How to Overcome Them

Blending cuisines or teams isn’t always smooth. Throwing together random ingredients without understanding their origins or interactions can lead to a culinary disaster. Similarly, diverse teams can experience misunderstandings, clashes, and inefficiencies if the differences aren’t approached thoughtfully.

I’ve worked on teams where cultural norms didn’t align, where different work styles led to frustration, and where communication felt like trying to cook without a recipe. These challenges are real, and some even argue that diversity inevitably leads to conflict and inefficiency, but I firmly believe – in no small part thanks to my multicultural upbringing – that they’re also opportunities to learn, adapt, and grow. When Diversity Works

When diverse teams find their rhythm, the results can be extraordinary. I’ve seen it in kitchens where cooks from different traditions share techniques, creating dishes neither could have conceived alone. And I’ve experienced it in businesses where varied approaches blend into solutions that feel groundbreaking.

When, at PeopleSoft in the 90s, we were centralizing all support functions for the EMEA region into a Shared Service Center in Amsterdam, the team included American, Dutch, French, Spanish, South African…it was a mini United Nations on our team. At first, the differences felt like roadblocks—even lunch schedules became debates. But as we learned to navigate and appreciate those differences, our work became richer. The challenges didn’t disappear, but they became part of the process, and the results were better for it.

Fusion isn’t a trend; it’s humanity’s natural state. Our foods, languages, and cultures are constantly evolving as we encounter and adapt to the new. Diverse teams are no different.
